As summer comes to a close I thought I’d share one of my favorite trends this year that will transition nicely into fall; Toile de Jouy. I’ve been obsessed with this pattern for a while and like most things, have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to it. Simply put Toile de Jouy is a repeated sketch-like print usually depicting a pastoral scene on a solid background. Just think of your grandparents house; matching wallpaper, drapes, duvet, you get the picture. If you would like a more technical explanation of what Toile de Jouy is and its origins I’ll direct you to this article here.
For the past couple of seasons designers have been reintroducing the old classic in their runway shows. Most notably Dior. Their 2019 Resort Collection was full of beautiful Toile de Jouy prints. They’ve continued the trend in their Dioriviera Beachwear Capsule Collection, but in a more summer appropriate color palette, switching out burgundy, navy and black for blush, red and blue. As of today the capsule collection is only available in a select number of stores, so unfortunately I can’t find any of the pieces on their website. However, I’ve found two articles (here & here) that have photos of most of the collection.
There are so many brands in my opinion doing the trend well right now, but I’ll quickly run through a few. Every brand puts their own spin on the trend, some of the most creative being Acne Studios and Milk White. Other brands have decided to go more tropical with their prints like Johanna Ortiz (Fall 2019), H&M and Belize. If you’re looking for a more “classic” toile, look to Petersyn, NST Studio, and Etsy.
I understand all over toile is a strong look and requires a lot of commitment, so H&M or Lorna Luxe x In The Style “Impossibly Perfect” collection serve as a great point of entry. I currently have a couple of pieces in my wardrobe like this dress that I’ll pair with a black turtleneck and sneakers in the coming months and this skirt with a pair of calf-length boots. Recently I ordered this dress and accompanying hair tie. I’m exicited to style them soon.
Well that’s it for me folks. I better get off of here before I find any more toile pieces to add to this already enormous post. I swear every day it’s something new.
